Always tired, grinding your teeth, running on empty? A narrow palate may be why.
Paige was exhausted. Every morning she woke up with jaw pain and a stiff neck, her teeth clenched from a night of grinding. She was falling asleep with friends, struggling to stay focused at work, and starting each day already behind. Paige had accepted all of this as her baseline. One consultation with Dr. Lena was all it took to realize it didn't have to be.
The cause most people never consider
Chronic fatigue, teeth grinding, jaw pain, and nasal congestion are often treated as separate problems – or written off as stress, poor sleep habits, or something to simply manage. What many people don't realize is that these symptoms may all trace back to a single structural issue: a narrow palate.
The palate – the roof of your mouth – is also the floor of your nose. When it's too narrow, the nasal airway constricts, the tongue has no room to rest properly, and the jaw compensates by clenching and grinding through the night as the body tries to keep the airway open. The result is disrupted sleep, chronic exhaustion, persistent jaw and neck tension, and breathing that never feels quite right. This is the foundation of airway dentistry – the recognition that how you breathe affects how you sleep, how you feel, and how fully you're able to function every day.

MARPE and MASPE – what it is and what it does
MARPE – Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion – is a treatment that widens the palate using a small device anchored to the bone with temporary mini-screws. MARPE delivers expansion directly to the skeletal structure, gradually creating permanent change in the width of the palate and the airway. As the palate widens, nasal volume increases, breathing improves, and the jaw no longer has to compensate. The field has since evolved toward MASPE – Miniscrew-Assisted Slow Palatal Expansion – which uses the same approach with a slower, more controlled protocol for even more predictable results. Before
I have a lot less neck pain and headaches. My face has much more evenness and symmetry to it. My smile is a lot bigger... those changes have increased my confidence.

Invisalign – completing the picture
Palatal expansion always sets the stage for orthodontic treatment. Once Paige's palate had been widened and her airway opened, she completed Invisalign to bring her teeth into their ideal alignment. Virtually invisible and removable, Invisalign gave her a straighter smile without interrupting her daily life – a natural complement to the structural work that had already transformed how she felt.
What Paige's life looks like now
She wakes up rested. The grinding is gone. The jaw pain and neck tension that had been her baseline for years have cleared. She has energy for her work, for her friends, for the moments she used to miss because she was too tired to show up fully. Her smile is straighter. And perhaps most importantly — her life has more life!
